Dijon

Today, as I often do when Alice is out for the evening, I cooked myself a steak. It’s like a little treat from me to me to make up for the fact that I’m alone all evening. I went to the supermarket after work and spent a dozen or so minutes picking out the steak that I wanted to buy. In the end I decided that I wanted a compromise between quality (fillet) and quantity (rump) so I chose an 8oz sirloin.

When I got home I realised that I’d forgotten to buy butter, and we were all out of olive oil, so I was worried my dinner was going to end up being dry. I did something completely  uncharacteristic and actually pre-heated the oven before using it — I had a baked potato that had to go in for an hour and a half — usually I wouldn’t bother pre-heating it, it’s just a waste of time IMO.

But tonight I took a bit more care, and it paid off.

I served my steak with a (perfectly cooked) baked potato, some rocket salad and, of course, a block of halloumi that I’d fried in garlic and pepper. I was worried about the no butter no oil thing, and thought it might be a bit dry, so luckily I’d found a tub of dijon mustard in the cupboard.

I fried the steak for 2 minutes on each side (apparently that’s the way to do it), and voila.
