Asterism

February 17th 2017

Today we had date night under the stars. We went to this pub/restaurant in the middle of the Cotswolds somewhere that you can basically only find by first getting completely lost down old country roads.

It’s so remote, and the night was so clear that we could look straight up and see the stars.

We stood in the car park for a few minutes before and after dinner and Alice pointed out various constellations to me. We’ve been together for ten years, but I’ve only just found out that she can name the constellations of stars in the night sky. I love that after all this time there are still things that I don’t know about her.

We stood there, and I followed her finger as she pointed out Orion’s Belt and the Plough – which, I guess are not technically constellations, they’re asterisms.

I grew up in an industrial town. It wasn’t too polluted, but I rarely got to see the night sky as clearly as I did tonight.

There was a huge, bright light among the stars in the sky (it was neither a plane or Superman) that Alice thought was a planet. I’ve just Googled it, and apparently Venus was visible tonight, February 17th. So, I guess that’s what we saw. I’ll have to remember to tell her that when she wakes up.

Sure, we had a lovely date night at the restaurant.

But, for me those few minutes were the best part of the night. Because I got to learn something new about Alice, and experience it with her.

Until tomorrow, it was something as simple as staring at the sky.
