Today I am starting to think that I can make some sort of career from writing. I’ve never really believed it before, mainly due to the fact that I’ve never really believed in myself, but today I do.

Basically the reason for the sudden change is because a twitter account with like 15,000 followers tweeted a link to the football blog I wrote a while ago. So within the space of 24 hours that post was read by over 1,000 people, and then someone saw the piece and wanted to upload it to their site too because it was so good, and now it’s got another 1,000 views on that site and so over this weekend 2,000 people have read my article. And that’s pretty cool. That’s more views in a day than I’ve had on these daily posts here in the last three months combined, which is both depressing and impressive.

One problem was that because I didn’t put my name or twitter handle on the piece anywhere, and I uploaded it onto a friends blog, it wasn’t clear to anyone who wrote it. So it started getting attributed as being written by the 15,000 followers guy who tweeted the link in the first place. So none of these people knew I wrote it. Which, to be honest, is fine by me. I don’t need the credit or the appreciation, it’s just crazy to think that that many people read it in such a small amount of time. Eventually people figured out that it was me that wrote it because the original guy corrected himself, and I was properly credited on the second site so I started getting all of this wonderful feedback from people who had read my article and loved it.

I am a simple man, and I feed off compliments. Although the most important thing to me was that people were reading and enjoying the piece, it was crazy good for me to hear/see the compliments people were giving. All day I’ve had people mentioning me on twitter saying it was an excellent read and they enjoyed it etc, and the more that happens the more I begin to think that maybe I could give this writing thing a go as a career (scary thought). Maybe.

I never thought I’d be the guy to write about football, but it seems that I am reasonably good at it, so that’s something to consider. I’m also considering reaching out to people over twitter with whom I am close and asking if they’d be interested in proof reading/making notes on my novel. It’d be good to get an opinion from people who don’t have a direct relationship with me that they could spoil by saying that it’s shit. Also, the age range of those people would fit my demographic better than, say, my mum. (sorry mum)

I’m proud of myself today.

Until tomorrow, that’s not something that happens often.
